Mother’s Day will be here before you know it and buying the perfect gift can be difficult. You want something that’s different from the past years yet screams I LOVE YOU MOM! I bet if you could give her the world you would but how much would that cost?

Well, you can finally give her that world you’ve been dreaming of … kind of … just one that’s more within your budget. With the 23andMe DNA testing kit you can give Mom the gift of finding out where her DNA comes from all around the world.

As an early Mother’s Day gift I received the 23andMe Kit to try with my Mom. In my case, I used my Mom’s sister who helped raise me after my mother suddenly passed away from a massive heart at the age of 40. This left me with a lot of unanswered questions for me and my children. I wanted to learn more about my DNA, my ancestry timeline and connect with DNA relatives, so I opted into the DNA Relatives tool especially since the 23andMe DNA database has more than one million genotyped customers worldwide. This is a huge start!

23andMe gives you a percentage breakdown by region, including eastern Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, Europe and more.

How It Works

1. Order – Your saliva collection kit typically arrives within 3 to 5 days. When it arrives remember to write down your 14-digit barcode number on the saliva collection. This is how you will register your sample.

2. Spit – Follow kit instructions to spit in the tube provided — all from home. Register your saliva sample tube using the barcode so they know it belongs to you, and mail it back to their lab in the pre-paid package.

3. Discover – In approximately 6 to 8 weeks, 23andMe will send you an email to let you know your reports are ready in your online account. Log in and start discovering what your DNA says about you.

The funnel lid has stabilizing liquid in it. After you fill the tube with saliva you will close the funnel lid, snapping it into place, which releases the liquid. This preserves your saliva as it travels back to the lab.

This is the tube you “spit” into which captures all of your saliva. You need to provide a certain amount of saliva in your sample, so you need to spit up to the fill line that is marked on the tube. Bubbles do not count! You cannot drink or eat for up to 30 minutes before doing this so please make sure your mouth isn’t too dry. It makes the collection a little tricky.

After we completed our kits I walked over to the corner mailbox and mailed it off. Although it will take a few for our results to arrive, I cannot wait to share my results with you all. Let’s see how much Neanderthal DNA I’ve inherited!

Are you curious about your own DNA? Well, starting now until Mother’s Day you can save $20 off your 23andMe kit + free gift wrap! This is the perfect way to celebrate your Mom Genes!

Happy Mother’s Day!
